ANDROLOGY UPDATE

Invitation

Diagnostic and therapeutic protocols have been developed for many diseases and determine daily medical practice. In Andrology though, despite having guidelines set by International Societies, there are no official diagnostic and therapeutic protocols; and it is not foreseen that there will be such protocols developed for any urologic disease other than prostate cancer. In an effort to develop therapeutic protocols for the most common diseases in Andrology, the Sexual and Reproductive Health Center (SRHC), which has completed 20 years of operation, along with the organizational support and know-how of the Institute of the Study of Urologic Diseases (ISUD), takes the initiative to establish a Task Group that will draft proposals for therapeutic protocols for the most common diseases of male infertility and sexual dysfunctions. For this purpose, SRHC and ISUD have invited colleagues Urologists whose daily clinical and research practice is primarily dedicated to Andrology issues, to contribute to the above effort. The methodology adopted for this venture was the methodology that is officially used for all therapeutic protocols set up by Scientific Committees of the Ministry of Health. In the initial phase, each one of the Task Group members was assigned with one protocol and was asked to carry out a review of the relevant literature. Based on their personal experience and taking into account the existing infrastructure conditions of the country, they were asked to propose a realistic diagnostic and therapeutic algorithm. This algorithm will be judged by two other members of the Task Group who will operate as independent reviewers.

This algorithm will be presented in Andrology Update 2019, which will be held in Thessaloniki on 25-27 January 2019. Every member of the Task Group will present their proposal/ algorithm, which will be optimized through an interactive procedure. Following Andrology update, the protocols will be completed and their final form will be published/released by IMOP. We invite you all to contribute to this highly significant initiative of SRHC/ ISUD with your active participation, to the benefit of all colleagues Urologists but mainly to the benefit of all men with sexual and infertility problems.

What is Andrology update?

Andrology update is a Masterclass training course for Urologists that has been organized by ISUD for years. It is actually a continuation of the historical training courses in Human Sexuality and Andrology that were initiated by the Sexual and Reproductive Health Center (SRHC) in 2001. From 2001 until 2013, SRHC had organized 31 training courses with the overall participation of more than 500 Urologists and 1000 Physicians of other medical specialties. Since 2014, ISUD has undertaken the organization and the event was renamed as Andrology Update. Embraced by all Urologists, Andrology Update has become our annual training meeting point for all those who are eager to keep abreast of new trends and developments in Andrology.

Andrology Update is the most practical ‘hands-on’ Masterclass organized by ISUD, presenting a simulation of the Urologists’ clinic setting where colleagues have to cope with problems they are frequently faced with in their daily clinical practice. In this way, by combining evidence-based Medicine with the participants’ clinical experience, the trainees’ knowledge is renewed and upgraded. Various topics are developed through interactive educational/training procedures, providing food for thought and discussion. The ultimate goal is to offer solutions to patients’ problems and improve their quality of life.

What does Andrology Update include this year?

Andrology update 2019 is dedicated to presenting proposals for diagnostic and therapeutic protocols in Andrology for discussion. Based on brief 15-minute presentations, there will follow fruitful 30-minute dialogues, so that the Urologists’ experience is shared, recorded and taken into account by the Moderators who are expected to complete the final algorithms that will be published by ISUD and later on implemented by Urologists/ Andrologists in daily clinical practice.

Workgroups: Clinical Skills & Hands-on-Training

Participants are divided in 4 groups and alternate in 4 rooms throughout the course. Every hands-on training session lasts 2 hours and aims at familiarizing trainees with therapeutic techniques used in our daily clinical practice. During the 4 hands-on sessions, trainees will practice clinical skills and learn secrets of medical practice. With the use of penis models, hands-on training will be provided on how to perform shockwave therapy, educate patient in making self-injections, use automatic injection systems, make collagenase clostridium intraplaque injections, and use penile extenders and vacuum pumps. Also, various types of penile prosthesis will be presented and protocols for penile prosthesis insertion will be discussed. Lastly, 4 selected infertility cases will be presented and discussed with regard to their diagnostic and therapeutic approach.
